SITUATION
World Computer Exchange is a global non-profit that connects youth in developing countries to the internet, while also building up skills and opportunities.
Their website serves different kinds of users including:
- Groups needing computers and technology
- Donors offering used equipment and money
- Volunteers offering to test computers and install software, packing containers in donor countries
- Volunteers offering to set up and run newly arrived donated computers in recipient countries
- Board Members
- Staff Members
SPECIFICALLY
- Drupal CMS was originally set up for their the system their website.
- With time, their needs and usage changed.
- Updates became more difficult to make by staff.
- New developments in Open Source software were not taken advantage of due to the older structure of the site.
- Analytics were too broad to inform on how visitors used the site.
- Many things were still being done ‘by hand.’
Finally, when a migration to a new server caused significant loss of data on the site, we were employed to get it back, quick.
INTERVENTION
What we did:
New WordPress site.
- Culled data from old sources, recreated aspects of old site
- Reorganized site structure, categories & post types.
- Rewrote descriptions on pages
- Added new images, optimized images for faster page loading.
- Forms. Implemented electronic forms, country-specific, for easier management of donors and recipients.
- Developed auto-responders to collect names & emails for automatic and accurate list management for e-newsletter.
- Developed Social Integration
- Customized the styling of the site.
- Implemented Security & Backup.

Development
What we did:
Recreated the site from Drupal to WordPress using a Genesis child theme.
Updated/developed the images and descriptions for all pages to better show the work of WCE.
Implemented electronic forms, country-specific, for easier management of donors and recipients.
Developed auto-responders to collect names & emails for automatic and accurate list management for e-newsletter.
Developed Social Integration
Customized the styling of the site.
Implemented Security & Backup.
